For Immediate Release
May 26, 2011 (Toronto) -‐-‐ Principal photography has begun on David Cronenberg’s latest film COSMOPOLIS, which he adapted from Don DeLillo’s novel of the same name. Starring Robert Pattinson (Water For Elephants, The Twilight Saga), the forty-‐day shoot on location and in studio will run through mid-‐July in Toronto.
COSMOPOLIS is produced by Paulo Branco (Mysteries of Lisbon) through Paris-‐based Alfama Films Production, and Martin Katz (Hotel Rwanda) of Toronto-‐based Prospero Pictures as a Canada-France co-‐production. COSMOPOLIS is the third collaboration between Katz and Cronenberg, after the multi-‐award-‐winning Spider and the soon-‐to-‐be released A Dangerous Method. Executive Producers are Edouard Carmignac and Grégoire Melin. Joseph Boccia serves as line producer and Walter Gasparovic serves as associate producer. COSMOPOLIS is directed by David Cronenberg.
COSMOPOLIS is a contemporary thriller about a young billionaire asset manager on a twenty-‐four hour odyssey across Manhattan. Despite traffic jams and a looming financial disaster, Eric Packer (PaUnson) risks traveling cross-‐ town in his stretch limousine for a haircut. During delays including a presidential motorcade, a celebrity funeral, and political protests, Eric receives visitors, both for business and pleasure, in his opulent, high-‐tech automobile. As the encounters and the economic crisis intensify, Packer cynically gambles with his clients’ fortunes and his own. The stakes are enormous, and in the hours that pass, Packer’s limousine and life veer toward the end of an era.
Rounding out the all-‐star internaFonal cast are Academy Award-‐winner Juliett Binoche (Chocolat), Academy Award-‐nominee Paul Giamatti (Barney’s Version), Academy Award-‐nominee Samantha Morton (In America), Sarah Gadon (A Dangerous Method), Mathieu Amalric (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) and Jay Baruchel (Tropic Thunder, The Trotsky).
The creative team includes Director of Photography Peter Suschitzky (A History of Violence), Production Designer Arv Greywal (Lars and The Real Girl) and Costume Designer Denise Cronenberg (Eastern Promises). Howard Shore (The Lord of The Rings Trilogy) will compose the music for the film.
Martin Katz, producer and founder of Prospero Pictures says “I am delighted to be continuing a decade-‐long collaboration with David Cronenberg on our third feature film together.” Katz believes “COSMOPOLIS is a timeless story of excess and greed that all audiences will recognize in the wake of the financial crisis.”
